KC Breed Watch: Bearded Collies given Category 1 listing
The Breed Health Co-ordinator has recently received a letter from the Kennel Club confirming that the Bearded Collie has been given a Breed Watch Category 1 listing (indicating no current Points of Concern):
"Re: Breed Watch Point of Concern - Excessively Long Coats
Following a letter from the Bearded Collie Club dated 20th July 2015, the Breed Standards and Conformation Sub-Group of the Dog Health Group have considered the request and have agreed that the following point, Excessively Long Coats, will be removed from Breed Watch.
The Bearded Collie will now be listed as Category One not Category Two on Breed Watch."
'Points of Concern' are described by the Kennel Club as ‘breed specific conformational issues which may lead to health problems’. ‘Excessively Long Coats’ was listed by the Kennel Club as a point of concern for Bearded Collies in 2012 despite strong representations from the breed.
In 2014 the Kennel Club made it mandatory for Championship Show judges of Category 2 and 3 Breeds to complete a Health Monitoring Form after their judging appointment to provide the Kennel Club with information on the health issues affecting the breed.
The information reported by all parties (including judges) is periodically reviewed by the Dog Health Group. If a specific concern ceases to be prevalent in the breed, the relevant point of concern can be removed from Breed Watch after consultation with the Club(s)/Council. Judges' monitoring of that point of concern then stops.
The Kennel Club’s online Breed Watch service has been updated to reflect the change and now shows Bearded Collies as having a Category 1 status.
