Bearded Collie Club Open Show - 12th April 2026
Judges' Critiques
Special Awards Classes - Judge- Lauren Goodbrand (Braesnobel)
Thank you to The Bearded Collie Club for inviting me to judge two of the special classes at their open show on 12th April 2026. I really enjoyed myself and was pleased to get such a great entry of quality dogs. Thank you to the stewards and committee for the smooth running of this show.
Class B- Graduate
1st Lewis & Moreland's Potterdale Prime Rose JW This young bitch's bright expression really caught my eye. Nicely proportioned, well balanced, without exaggeration. Good muscles in hindquarters. Deep chest with well sprung ribs of good length. Great level topline. All these qualities were well applied on the move, allowing her to show good reach and drive, making for fantastic movement. She has a lovely dark coat toning with her dark brown eyes and great pigment.
2nd Osborne's Potterdale Prime Edition There was a lot to like about this young male and afterwards found out was a litter mate to 1st place so there is no wonder I liked him. He was very masculine with a beautiful, large square head in good proportion to body. Strong parallel front quarters of good bone. Good muscle tone in hindquarters. Moved well with good gait but preferred 1’s front reach on the day. Good pigment with dark eye toning with black coat colour.
3rd Wood's Osmart Tzara’s Midnite Aria This well-proportioned bitch was pleasing to watch. She was slightly more traditional than my first placings with her slightly wavy coat and plain markings, but this was another reason to enjoy her. Great strong coarseness of coat. Good depth of chest. Nicely angulated and good turn of stifle allowing her to move smoothly in the ring with good reach and drive. Slightly dipping topline on stack but not showing this on the move. Correct eye colour and good dentition.
1st Wood's Larkslane’s Dream Weaver Of Osmart (imp Can) A very nicely constructed bitch showing really well and not letting her age show. This 9 and a half year old bitch has good angulation, with good muscle tone in hind quarters. Great head with a strong muzzle. Strong neck of good length flowing down to a perfectly held topline. These qualities were clearly demonstrated on the move holding her head low/inline with topline, to a nicely sloping croup and tail held low and out for the perfect look. What I loved most about this girl was her dark eyes and a sweet expression with dark pigment, with a really feminine look.
2nd Bowden's Subessen Heart Of Hearts Really feminine bitch of quality. Well angulated front and rear. Good length of rib and well sprung though finer than 1. Level topline held on stand and move. Great lay of shoulder, and good muscle tone in hind legs allowing her to propel herself and look as though she floated around the ring with such ease. Correct eye colour and good dentition.
3rdBramley & Moore's Coalacre Do The Hokey Cokey Handsome masculine dog with a great strong, square head in good proportion to his body. Good muscle in shoulders and hindlegs. Good angulation and level topline held well on move. Freestood nicely for handler. Dense coat of good texture. Preferred movement of 1 and 2.
Fun Obedience Classes - Judge: Liz Jay (Talraz)
It was lovely to see the Club holding to tradition and featuring these breed-specific obedience classes despite the ever-present worry that they may not be well-supported. Happily this was not the case this year and we had competitors in all four classes keen to have a go. The acoustics in the hall are pretty daunting for a sound sensitive breed, and even for their handlers, so that often the dogs were relying on body language and hand signals to understand what was required. Clever dogs! I saw flashes of beautiful work, attentive dogs trying hard to please, and the usual clowning around we all know so well, turning it into a game and why not ? The handlers were sporting about the competition and clearly enjoying the opportunity to spend time working with their dogs. Well done to you all
STARTERS (5 entries)
1st Christopherson's Beardora Roly Poly - The stay exercises were very costly for most in this class, but Oswald gained full marks in both the sit stay and the down stay as well as impressive full marks in his recall. Just bits and pieces in the heelwork but overall a very nice round, 58 out of a possible 60 marks, well done, lovely happy dog
2nd Rivers' Talraz Comedy Act for Kyleca VW - Full marks on the down stay and some nice relaxed loose lead heel work won this place for Daisy. Unfortunately she broke her sit stay, better luck next time 52/60
3rd Buswell's Braemuir Sonraichte Aon for Scotesham - Again the weak point was the sit stay though once we turned it into a training round Timber remained in place like a good 'un. Bad luck as the rest of his round was nice with full marks in the down stay 51/60
4th Lewis & Moreland's Potterdale Prime Rose JW - Phoebe took a polite interesr in her owner's strange requests and managed a quite impressive round which included a full marks down stay and a very nice recall. Potentially she might be up to do more one day 50/60
5th Newson's Beardora On The Huh - A perfect recall was the highlight of this round but there were glimpses of real promise, we felt this dog was a little uncomfortable in the noisy venue but he still tried his best 45/60
TRIERS (6 entries)
This was another class where the stay exercises proved costly with no dog achieving full marks .The heelwork was marked a little more strictly than in the previous class.
1st Butler's Calowych Moana at Baxilby JW - Unfortunately Regan stood up on handler's return in the down stay as otherwise she would have been the only full marks dog in both stays, however she still did enough to win this class with a full marks down stay and just little bits and pieces in the heel work and recall, well done - 55/60
2nd Rivers' Talraz Comedy Act at Kyleca JW - Again the sit stay proved Daisy's weakness though she managed a few extra seconds this time, and produced another perfect down stay and some steady loose lead heel work - 53/60
3rd Homer's Matamata Prancing Pony - Such a pity Harvey proved to be so shaky on his stays as his other work was beautiful to watch, he really lived up to his name and danced around the ring, such a happy boy 50/60
4th Bevis' Ramsgrove Sunshine at Beabeardies VW - Bea was in the ring to enjoy herself but managed an almost full marks sit stay and a decent crack at all the exercises on offer, happy girl 49/60
5th Swaby's Ragellie Tale Of Gold for Marsby - Stanley was a little distracted in the ring, i'm sure he will have better days 48/60
HOPEFULS (5 entries, 2 absent)
1st Trodd's Chelsasa Open Secret - Casey was a pleasure to judge showing great focus and attitude especially in the heel free work. Basically he produced what we were looking for, being fussy I picked up on some minor wide working and slightly crooked sits but his other work was exemplary with the only full mark stays in this class, well done - 114 out of a possible 115
2nd Buswell's Douglasdale Garanatus at Scotesham - The sit stay was Bramley's undoing in this class, unfortunately, as the rest of his work was nice with full marks in recall, retrieve and down stay. Better luck next time 104/115
3rd Gilbert's Bryonyhill Secret Saturn - Autumn was very excited to be in the ring and not giving her best attention today, however she did a perfect sit stay to prove she will have better days - 102/115
FLIERS (3 entries, 1 absent)
1st Trodd's Chelsasa Open Secret - Another nice round from this happy willing boy. I was marking a little more strictly in this higher class, but again it was only bits and pieces and full marks were gained in the majority of the exercises. One of the few dogs with a totally reliable stay today and this is such a genuinely useful thing to teach our dogs so worth training for - 128 out of a possible 130 today
2nd Homer's Matamata Prancing Pony - Apart from the stays this was a very nice round to judge, Harvey clearly loves working with his owner, a lovely team. You know where the extra homework is needed now - 102/130
